Imagine you have to dial the international phone number shown below. How would you do it? Considering you can place internation calls (i.e. its part of the dialing plan of the phone your using)
Example Phone number (for Isle of Man)
+ 44 (0)555 555 3333
- plus,+ , symbol is the exit code for your country (011 in the USA), meaning the next number after the plus is the country code, followed by rest of number
- so right after the plus,+ ,symbol is the country code (country code for USA & Canada is 1, for UK is 44 – the reason you see all US numbers start with a 1 is to illustrate the country code, within the US it is not necessary to dial the 1)
- After the country code is the phone number within that country
- So how does one dial the +? on most phones its Hold 0 on phone and that will automatically dial the exit code for your country (which is 011 in the USA & Canada, 00 for UK). In otherwords there is another option, instead of dialing +/holding 0, is to dial the actual exit code inplace of the + which is 011 in USA & Canada, and 00 in UK
- Also some places of business require an exit code just to get out of their phone network, so that you can dial the regular public telephone network. So on work phones first dial 9, followed by + (hold 0, or put in actual the exit code for the country your in), followed by country code of country your dialing, followed by rest of the number
- What this means, is that usually inside of a business there is a private/segregated phone network , with its own numbers. For example one person can call their collegue (sitting a couple cubicles away) from their work phone by dialing 1234.
- For a person to dial outside to the real world, they have to dial 9+the outside world number
- Space or dashes, -_, or parenthesis, (), dont mean anything, they are just visual organizers
So if your in the USA using a cellphone and trying to dial above number to Isle of Man, you would dial: + 44 (0)555 555 3333
FROM CELL PHONE / HOUSE PHONE: Dial like so: 011 44 0 555 555 3333
- The 011 replaces the +
- 011 to dial outside of the US, 44 to dial to ISLE OF MAN, 0 555 555 3333 to dial a phone number at ISLE OF MAN
FROM CELL PHONE / HOUSE PHONE: Or you can dial like so: 0 44 0 555 555 3333
- Hold 0 until it replaces it with 011 (aka the +, or the exit code). NOTE: I used a bold 0 to represent that its held longer. Bold numbers are not a standard anywhere, I just made it up to help this part of the article
- Then 44 to dial the country code of ISLE OF MAN. Then the rest of the phone number 0 555 555 3333
FROM BUSINESS: If your in an office building that also requires to dial an exit code (most common is number 9):
- dial like so: 9 011 44 0 555 555 3333
- Prefix with the business exit code which is 9
- 9 to dial outside of the office, 011 to dial out of the US, 44 to dial ISLE OF MAN, 0 555 555 3333 to dial made up number
NOTE: + 44 (0)555 555 3333, I made that number up, im not sure if its actually someones number (hopefully not). I used the generic movies/tvshows formula of using 555 to make sure its fake (but im not sure if this same 555 rule applies to other countries)
..The end of my article..

International country codes and exit codes
What are Country / Exit Codes?
Country codes are used when dialing an international phone number. On the other hand, exit codes (also known as international access codes or IDD International Direct Dialing codes) are used for dialing out of your country. For example if you want to call from Anguilla to Afghanistan you must dial: 011 + 93 + phone number.
Below is a comprehensive list of all country phone codes and international exit codes. For more info on dialing a specific country (such as area codes, phone books, and more) please use the top navigation to choose your country.
What is a Trunk Code (Prefix)?
Trunk Codes are single or double digit codes used to place calls within a certain country. They are left out when dialing in from abroad.
